Transportation in New Zealand

Information on where to catch, what number, times, fares, delays and cancellations are available on the MAXX website and call centre. Animals (except for official guide dogs for the blind) are not allowed on buses or trains.

Buses

You can take a bus to most places in the Auckland region. Buses run most often during the day, and a number of night services are available.

Signal the driver by raising one arm when you see your bus coming. Pay your fare to the driver and take the ticket from the machine. Drivers appreciate the exact amount or small notes. Pull the cord or push the 'STOP' bell when you want to get off.

Trains

Check the station signs to find out which side of the platform your train will be leaving from. Stand behind the yellow lines. The train will stop and the doors will open when it reaches the station. You may get on once other passengers leave the train.

You can buy a single-ride ticket, a 10-trip ticket or monthly pass before you get on a train at the ticket office or ticket machine at your station or on the train with cash.

You can take your bike on a train if it is not busy - the staff on board will let you know. You will need to buy a ticket for your bicycle.

Ferries

Ferries run regularly to the islands in the Hauraki Gulf and between North Shore City and Auckland City. You can take road vehicles across on special 'car ferries', from Downtown Ferry Terminals.

Dogs, small animals in cages and bicycles can be carried on most ferry services. You may have to pay extra. Check with the ferry company before you travel.

Taxis

All Auckland taxis are run by private companies. Taxis can be hired from 'ranks' (usually near city centres, shopping malls or railway stations) or booked in advance by telephone. You are not permitted to 'flag down' or 'hail' a moving taxi. Special rates often apply to and from the airport.
