Farah - Teacher
Farah, a teacher from Fiji, migrated to New Zealand with her family three years ago and attempted to find work as a teacher. She was frustrated by her lack of success and attended the ARMS First Steps Employment workshop, followed by an individual appointment with an ARMS employment consultant. Farah's field of teaching in her own country had been religious studies. It was explained to Farah that there would be no opportunities in the New Zealand public school system for her to teach this subject and that it might be useful to use some of her other skills to obtain employment. An assessment of her skills and experience showed that through assisting her husband's business, she had many years of experience in office work and organization of meetings. Farah looked at her options and decided to focus on administration training and to work towards a new career. The ARMS consultant then supported her to get a part-time job in customer services while undertaking an office skills course.

Raja - Analyst
Raja had worked as an analyst in India, having gained a Masters degree from a prestigious university in the US. Since migrating to NZ 12 years ago, he had attempted to find a similar job for several years, without success. He was helped by his Work and Income Case Manager to find work as a night filler in a supermarket, topping up his income by delivering pizza. After many years, he became extremely frustrated and decided to return home. His wife however was reluctant to return to India and encouraged Raja to visit ARMS. The consultation with the ARMS employment advisor highlighted that while Raja had excellent qualifications and solid experience in India, he did not possess the appropriate job search skills to find a job in New Zealand. ARMS and Career Services staff worked together to coach and support him to identify suitable job options. After 6 months of intensive job search, Raja found a position in the private sector with a salary of over 44 k.
