PATHWAYS TO EMPLOYMENT--INTRODUCTION

ARMS staff provide accurate and up-to-date information and referral onwards to appropriate organisations or agencies to assist migrants to access employment in New Zealand through our "PATHWAYS TO EMPLOYMENT" services. These services include: seminars on how to find employment in NZ (Job Search Seminars), specialised workshops for professional migrants, appointments with other agencies on-site i.e. appointments with a Work Broker from Work and Income (Tuesdays), appointments with Career Services, Job Board for 'entry-level' employment and advice on employment-related English courses.

JOB SEARCH SEMINARS

This seminar provides the "first steps' to finding employment in NZ. It provides information and introductions to agencies who can assist. This day-long seminar has expert presenters covering:
Practical information on job searching and finding employment in Auckland/New Zealand
NZ employment culture and labour market
An overview on preparing NZ styled CVs and improving your interview skills
Looking for a first job through our updated "Job board"
Making appointments with some of the presenters who can assist you further during one on one appointments

This seminar is run at the ARMS Auckland  Centre weekly and at the ARMS Manukau Centre fortnightly. See workshop schedules for details.

SPECIALISED PROFESSIONAL WORKSHOPS

ARMS works collaboratively with other organisations on specialised 'Pathways to Employment' initiatives. These are targeted at specific groups of professional migrants to assist them in gaining employment appropriate to their training and experience.

We also offer workshops for Migrant Teachers, for more information on these contact Angela Yatri, on (09) 625 2440.

Currently, ARMS is also working with SIGIE/IPENZ (Support Group for Immigrant Engineers and Institute of Professional Engineers) on a project to support migrant engineers into appropriate professional employment. For further information, please call (09) 625 2440 or email reception@arms-mrc.org.nz.

CAREER SERVICES/RAPUARA

Career Services Rapuara (www.careerservices.govt.nz) is an independent government agency offering training information and advice, and career guidance to New Zealanders. They have branches all around NZ, and in Auckland they have offices in Manukau and the North Shore where Career Advisors work with clients on a one-on-one basis, helping them with their career needs, including assistance with CV preparation, interview skills, understanding the needs of the employers, etc.

These services are FREE for all New Zealand permanent residents who are unemployed or under employed.

ARMS WORKS CLOSELY WITH CAREER SERVICES

A Careers Advisor is based at the ARMS Auckland Centre, three days a week for one-to-one appointments with clients. Appointments can be scheduled by calling ARMS on 625 2440 or at the end of the Job Search Seminars held every week on Tuesdays.

NEW KIWIS PROGRAMME

The Auckland Chamber of Commerce has a New Kiwis website which supports highly qualified migrants into employment. The purpose of this site is to link the skills of migrants to job vacancies in the Small Medium Enterprise sector in New Zealand.  www.newkiwis.co.nz is funded by the Department of Labour. For more information on New Kiwis please contact Sheaam Achmat on (09) 3753929 or e-mail sachmat@chamber.co.nz.

The chamber also runs the Kiwi Career Success programme, a free 2 and a 1/2 day course for migrant job seekers.  Courses are held every 2 weeks and class sizes are limited. To register, call the Employment Division at the Auckland Chamber on (09) 309 6100 or email kcs@chamber.co.nz
