INDIVIDUAL CONSULTATION

During your one-to-one consultation, the ESOL Advisor will gather information on your:

. particular settlement priorities e.g. to get a job
. relevant circumstances e.g. where they live, access to transport, financial situation
. entitlement to courses e.g. whether you have pre-paid through the "English for Migrants' language levy as part of your immigration process

The ESOL Advisor will then provide you with recommendations as to what ESOL options would be most suitable to meet your particular needs eg:

. name of a provider (school) including their address, contact details, and information about how to get there
. types of courses offered by the provider
. cost of the courses
. a 'pathway' plan for developing your English skills further
. useful links to other settlement programmes or services

ESOL SUCCESS STORY

Candace moved to New Zealand several years ago with her husband and child. She had nearly 10 years experience as an engineer in China and advanced proficiency in English.

Because her initial efforts in finding work in her field were not successful, Candace did additional university level work in English and office administration and computing. She also met with one of the English Advisors at ARMS after attending a First Steps in Employment Workshop.

Her level of English was tested and the results were discussed in relation to her career goal of working as an engineer. Candace says of that experience:

"After taking some advice from the English Advisor, I gained a deeper understanding about the language requirements in the work place as well as possible career directions for me and where I could put more effort into my English."

Candace's name was submitted as a candidate for a pilot programme organized by ARMS, Work and Income and a special subgroup of successfully employed migrant and New Zealand engineers,(SIGIE), who are members of IPENZ,( the Institute of Professional Engineers of New Zealand). This pilot programme is organized as a means of supporting migrant engineers into employment.

In this pilot programme Candace will be advised by a member of IPENZ on a one to one basis about:

. how to adapt her CV to advertised positions
. how to interview effectively

She will also be made familiar with matters directly related to her field of engineering in New Zealand. Part of their guidance will be done in conjunction with the ARMS English Advisor as issues arise in relation to the further development of her English language skills in her job search process.
