CAB LANGUAGE LINK

Is a charitable organisation and a branch of the New Zealand Association of Citizens Advice Bureau Inc.

This service ensures that language need not be a barrier to people who lack confidence or skills in the English language, or for those who are seeking assistance with their settlement into a new country. 

The aim is to provide free, confidential information and advice, interpreting support and advocacy for migrants and refugees in 26 languages on a wide range of settlement needs, queries, problems and relevant services for new settlers. The information is regularly updated and supported by trained staff using an extensive CAB database.

CAB Language Link provides 'face-to-face' interviews, telephone or email service to all people within the Auckland Region. It also offers a national telephone interpreting service which can be freely accessed through any of the 90 local Citizens Advice Bureau throughout New Zealand; by contacting the New Zealand Settlement Support Coordinators; by calling the 0800 number displayed in the contacts.

Assistance, in your own language on all settlement needs, queries and issues - 26 languages (see listing below)
Confidential support and help that is impartial, accurate and up-to-date.
A telecommunications system that can have several parties in on the same conversation to address your difficulties quickly.
Identifying the appropriate person or agency for advocacy assistance for complex issues.
Practical assistance with completion of forms.

Interpreters and translations for personal needs.

To provide you with free information, support, advocacy and impartial advice on the following:

Immigration e.g. knowledge of the different types of visa available; rules for obtaining citizenship; assistance in form filling as well as trouble-shooting with any applications. i.e. work visa, residency permit, indefinite returning residency visa, citizenship etc.
Income Support & Benefits e.g. detailed information about benefits, entitlements and assistance available from Work and Income NZ.
Taxation System e.g. obtaining IRD No and the tax system of New Zealand, including the 'Working for Families' assistance.
Housing & Tenancy e.g. laws relating to tenancy such as bond money, flatting agreements, landlords responsibilities etc.
Employment issues e.g. identifying relevant sources to find a job, how to address problems with your employer, Minimum wage etc.
Education and Training e.g. identifying the training agencies and support to gain NZ qualifications, service to help you update or improve you CV, schools and preschools in local areas.
Health e.g. what are the rights of a resident or work permit holder of New Zealand, how the NZ Health system works, need a Chinese doctor or specialist?
Family Issues & Counselling e.g. any type of family or individual problems and referral pathways to suitable agencies, relationship breakdowns etc.
Consumer rights e.g. points to be aware of before buying second hand car, your rights when goods break after several weeks, the fridge you had fixed still doesn't go, etc.
General matters e.g. payment of electric bills, how to get your telephone connected, contacts for local recreational activities, bus or train timetables, etc.
